Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) System

LAMP servers are installed with Linux OS, Apache web server software, MySQL database, and PHP program. Under this environment, different users can install various open source applications such as wordpress, phpmyadmin, joomla, prestashop, phpbb for their own purposes on one server thus sharing and reducing the cost of hosting. It is a cheap and flexible solution for hosting database and PHP applications.

Security On LAMP

Instead of following the general ISP/ASP standard to enable the PHP safe_mode, AfterOffice LAMP server safe_mode has been disabled to allow hosting of greater range of applications (open source applications included) and widen up development flexibility, yet offer sufficient security and protection from internal script exploit.

The following are the custom tuning that has been done in the PHP configuration:

  • The open_basedir has been used in individual virtual hosting record, so that php scripts are restricted to access their own virtual directory only.
  • There are a set of php functions has been disabled, mainly related to security consideration. Use phpinfo() to see for the detail on disable_functions.
  • Physical path to each domain is /data/web/www/domain-name.com where "domain-name.com" is the actual domain virtual hosting name (without the www).
