MailNow configuration issues PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 September 2010 10:13

A few special care you need to ensure MailNow running well in your setup.

1. Make sure to authenticate all the SMTP setup, so that email will be sent without issue. Sending email without SMTP authentication may works if "spoof prevention" has turn off, and only for internal email among users in within the same domain.

2. Make sure to set "Allow missing "QUIT" command in authenticated session" under SMTP settings to YES. You can find this option by login with your administrator account with VO, usually avomaster, and go to Profile -> Admin Tasks. *

* MailNow seems to terminate SMTP session without sending a proper "QUIT" command, which in many cases, can be treated as incomplete conversation and be ignored by the recipient server.

We have reported such issue to MailNow in August 2010. We hope they can rectify the issue in their future release.

Why am I getting partial email, and sometime duplicated copy of the same email? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

Question: I am getting email with partial content or corrupted attachments occasionally, and sometime multiple copy of such email. Why?

This has something to do with the communication between mail servers (SMTP).
When the sender mail server attempted to deliver the email over to Afteroffice mail server, the email delivery could be failed halfway due to sudden drop on the network quality, or some interruptions in between. At this stage, the email is likely incomplete and should be ignored by the recipient server, in this case, Afteroffice Mail server.

Afteroffice Mail server engineer decided to take this further by capturing these incomplete email, and deliver to our customer account anyway. By doing this, the customer will know that the email has arrived in-time, although corrupted, and serve as an early alert on the email exchange process.
The recipient of the email, in this case, Afteroffice's customer will likely to get copies of the same email as the sender mail server will attempt to resend the email again, sometime over a period of 48 hours.

It is rather annoying if the email carries large attachments and recipient is getting multiple copies of it.
You can always login with the browser, go to Mail and remove the unwanted/incomplete copies of the same email quickly instead of downloading them all.

In some cases, this effect small email too (without any of the attachment). When the quality of the network has degraded to certain level, it effect email of all sizes.
However, such issue normally would last for a day or two in general, and only effecting specific sender and logistics.

Also, since the email that you send out utilizing the same SMTP channel, your outgoing email get the same "treatment" as well when your connection to the Mail server is less than satisfactory.

This is why you are getting more corrupted email, incomplete email over other service provider when you host your email service with Afteroffice.

What more to be expected:
Afteroffice engineer is working on a way for customer to have this special handling OFF by demand. To follow the usual industrial standard on discarding partial email.
Also, there will be some indications on the email when it was transmitted partially, to avoid confusion over the issue.

Why can't I redirect email to free email services? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Liang Tyan Fui
Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:06

Redirect email to Gmail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail etc has been disabled for quite some time now, for us to offer better quality of service on the server email delivery.

All free email service provider controlled their bandwidth and number of email allow from email servers around the world.
Setting redirect means there will be A LOT of email (including spam) redirect from your account to these free services, and could resulting a temporary traffic block on the free email service provider.

This means:
- you will most likely not going to get the all of redirect email delivered to the free email service provider like gmail, yahoo and hotmail.
- your email address (or your email server) will be black-listed if the amount of email is over their quota.
- your email sending to other recipients on these free email address will be degraded too, since your email server will likely under temporary block most of the time.

We hope you understand our intension on such restriction.

Note: If you are using gmail, there is a better way to get the same result by using Gmail's remote POP3 instead. Login with your Gmail account, go to Settings -> Accounts and Import -> Add POP3 email account.
